“The Watchman” is inspired by my experience witnessing an epic and unexpected thunderstorm that rolled through the valley of Zion National Park one October day. On the last day of camping in this incredible valley, it was as if this storm was magnetized to the valley - following a path into and through it with a seeming purposeful precision and directness. As the rain pummeled the arid desert soil, ephemeral waterfalls and streams formed in an instant as gravity led the water into the Virgin River. The rain brought the earth’s sandstone sediment along for the ride into the river, transforming its colour from crystal clear pale turquoise to a murky brick red.
